Invisible Hazards In Your Commercial Facility

It’s pretty clear when a carpet or floor or even windows need cleaning, but there are often areas in your commercial facility that are less obvious but desperately need cleaning. Small, invisible particles like fungi and bacteria can wreak havoc on your facility and your employees if they spread and contaminate your buildings. Fungi and bacteria can exacerbate a host of health issues including respiratory problems, asthma, allergies, and bacterial diseases like staph infections, strep throat, tuberculosis, and E. coli infections.

In order to prevent these serious diseases, many of which can survive on a wide range of surfaces, it is important to know where to look in your facility for contaminated areas.

Worse Than the Bathroom

While bathrooms are often thought of as the primary area of contamination, research has indicated that there are other more contaminated places:

  • Gyms: Does your office or facility have a fitness room or gym? Imagine the number of hands that touch the workout equipment handles, hand weights, barbells, and other surfaces. Chances are, people are not sanitizing their hands in between every machine or exercise. In fact, a study published in BMC Infectious Diseases found that 38% of the tested surfaces in gyms were contaminated with staph bacteria. Considering the illnesses that staph can lead to, the prevalence of bacteria is disconcerting!

  • Vents: We often don’t see the inside of air vents so we may not think about what could be lurking. HVAC systems have an important role in circulating air throughout your commercial facility, which can lead to serious health concerns if an airborne pathogen is found. A harmful fungus, for example, can circulate in an entire facility without being noticed until illness strikes large numbers of people. This concern is especially relevant for hospitals and other medical facilities that house patients with compromised immune systems.
